The Nederlands Film Festival has selected twelve productions for the Gouden Kalf Competitie Digitale Cultuur 2026. Presented during Storyspace at Bibliotheek Utrecht, the works explore how digital techniques can tell stories beyond film and television. According to the NFF, our relationship with new technologies such as AI is a major theme for many creators, with the interaction between people, technology and meaning as a common thread.

DEN publishes a step-by-step plan for vibe coding in cultural organisations

DEN shows how cultural organisations without a technical background can use vibe coding to create prototypes, such as forms, checklists, dashboards and audience-oriented tools. The step-by-step plan emphasises that teams must first formulate a clear problem, consciously choose AI assistants or specialized platforms, test results as a conversation and have a developer watch before a public tool goes live.

DEN describes how AI advisers can create prototypes through vibe coding without a lengthy development process: they describe a form, quiz or internal tool in plain language, and an AI assistant writes the code. For cultural organisations, DEN emphasises starting with a concrete problem, testing results iteratively and having a developer review the work before any public-facing tool goes live.

Artist, programmer and engineer Kasper Jordaens’s Lost In Diffusion project seeks to better understand the role of algorithms and AI models in relation to a museum collection. AI has proved valuable in turning heritage data into accessible, interconnected and understandable information, yet its potential to generate meaningful new data remains largely untapped. Using a collection database containing metadata and images of the museum’s design objects, Jordaens retrained a diffusion model¹. The aim was both to help the machine understand the nuances of design and to create a model that could act as a co-agent alongside a designer, rethinking the relationship between people and machines in the design process.

AI helps doctors find the information they need quickly by filtering hundreds of reports and documents, automating processes and preventing details from being missed. For complex tasks such as diagnosis, however, conventional AI is not reliable enough. Explainability is therefore crucial. Unlike opaque models that operate as a black box, explainable AI follows clinically acceptable reasoning and shows how a decision was reached, allowing doctors to assess whether the outcome is trustworthy.

Developing artificial intelligence that detects the dangerous properties of chemicals and predicts which toxic effects they cause in humans. That is the goal of an international research project in which researchers from the Innovative Testing in Life Sciences & Chemistry professorship are participating. Specifically, the effects of chemicals on the liver, kidneys and developing brain are examined. The development of artificial intelligence contributes to the reduction of animal experiments. According to the researchers, toxicological research based on artificial intelligence is also more accurate and future-proof than research with laboratory animals. The project receives funding of more than 17 million euros from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is getting better at solving complex problems, but how well does an AI model actually understand the logic behind its answers? New research tested the “analogy skills” of GPT models—or their ability to recognize patterns and connections and apply them to new situations. GPT models fall short when the problems are modified, revealing important weaknesses in their reasoning capabilities.
