Artist, programmer and engineer Kasper Jordaens’s Lost In Diffusion project seeks to better understand the role of algorithms and AI models in relation to a museum collection. AI has proved valuable in turning heritage data into accessible, interconnected and understandable information, yet its potential to generate meaningful new data remains largely untapped. Using a collection database containing metadata and images of the museum’s design objects, Jordaens retrained a diffusion model¹. The aim was both to help the machine understand the nuances of design and to create a model that could act as a co-agent alongside a designer, rethinking the relationship between people and machines in the design process.

The Raad voor Cultuur has started an advisory process on the impact of AI on the cultural and creative sector, chaired by Prof. Dr. Martijn van der Steen. New research: Predicting the safety of chemicals with artificial intelligence

Developing artificial intelligence that detects the dangerous properties of chemicals and predicts which toxic effects they cause in humans. That is the goal of an international research project in which researchers from the Innovative Testing in Life Sciences & Chemistry professorship are participating. Specifically, the effects of chemicals on the liver, kidneys and developing brain are examined. The development of artificial intelligence contributes to the reduction of animal experiments. According to the researchers, toxicological research based on artificial intelligence is also more accurate and future-proof than research with laboratory animals. The project receives funding of more than 17 million euros from the European Commission's Horizon 2020 programme.
